US stocks are staging a broad-based recovery on Monday as investors shake off last week’s AI-fueled selloff and look ahead to Apple’s highly anticipated earnings report after the close. As of midday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 1.01%, the S&P 500 has gained 0.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite is climbing 0.6% as markets attempt a comeback following last week’s tech rout.
Markets tumbled Friday as tech stocks slid amid disappointing earnings reports from Amazon and Alphabet and concerns about massive AI spending. The Nasdaq posted its worst single-day percentage drop in nearly five months on Friday, tumbling 2.9% to close at 25,437, while the S&P 500 declined 1.8% to 7,580.07 and the Dow slid 1.09% to 51,770.31. Falling oil prices are helping stocks start the month on a positive note, offering some respite after the bruising selloff in the AI trade.
All eyes are now on Apple, which reports fourth-quarter earnings after the bell. “Apple’s results will be particularly interesting because of its relatively limited exposure to large-scale AI infrastructure spending compared with its peers,” with analysts noting that “strong results could help stabilize the Nasdaq, but disappointing guidance could quickly undermine this morning’s tentative recovery.” Options markets are pricing in a ±4.4% move for AAPL on earnings, while Palantir and ON Semiconductor are also set to report after the close today, with implied moves of ±12.0% and ±11.8%, respectively.
For October, the Nasdaq recorded its worst month since March 2025, ending 5.3% lower, while the S&P 500 finished the month down 0.9% — contrasting with a gain of 1.7% for the Dow, which benefited from its relatively lower tech weighting.
